Toolkit 2: Character Design 10

On the last week of character design we were put in groups and had to create 3 new characters for a randomly given already existing title.

My group with Alexandra and Olivia were given Noddy, Toyland Detective.
Alexandra made the guest hero, a healthy food loving detective, Olivia made the sidekick/victim, a chef who's fridge was stolen, and I made the villain, a racoon who happens to steal fridges because of his love for food.

This mischievous critter is made of plastic and is very well but a very intelligent animal, to go with the kid friendly theme, making sure the villain in reality actually means no harm and simply might be misunderstood.

He lives in a cardboard box and already has another fridge he'd stolen from some family.

And a bonus task was to design the character as a car, in the surprise situation when a client might have some kind of spontaneous idea they wan't fulfilled.

Toolkit 2: Character Design 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9

Week 5

Facial Expressions

On week 5 we explored character expressions and how they can determine personality and convey emotion.
We started with human characters, then anthropomorphic items, and lastly animals.

The explorations with my project:

The protagonist has custom self-made eyebrows for better expression
The nobles change masks to express emotion

Week 6

Props and Sidekicks

As our task we were given a random a certain culture and had to choose an individual, and put it into a sci-fi setting as a sidekick.

Afterwards we were designing a sidekick for our lead character in our projects, regardless if it would show up in the end result.
Here are some more focused first concepts for the protagonist and the sidekick
Sidekick concepts are the mechanical birds in the lower right corner.

Week 7

Setting the Scene

For this we were tasked to choose and analyse the shots and staging of a film or show of our choosing.
I analysed a scene in Carmen Sandiego
Afterwards we had to come up with a chase scene in a randomly assigned location. Mine was airport.

Here's a rough start of a storyboard for my project. Visualising the entrance of the protagonist into the noble's mansion.

Week 8

Perspective

We were taught about the way to approach perspective and how best to construct it, being 1 point, 2 point or 3 point perspective. We were then tasked to utilize it within one of our own scenes as an animation layout.

Week 9

Production Bible

This week we were taught about the structure and design of a production bible and how to approach it for our own project.
This lead us to the basics of graphic design and we were tasked to design a logo of a randomly given theme and then design a poster for a movie of our choice.

In terms of project, here are the rough sketches and progress with concepts and turnarounds

Toolkit 2: Character Design 4

In week 4 we explored body language and how it can define character.
We practiced with quick gestures of each other acting out certain scenarios, and afterwards added on mass.
After the practice, we had to choose a character from one of the presented scenarios, and build upon a pose, to express their character. I chose a werewolf

In terms of this term's character design project, I've yet to tackle specific body language, but here's my exploration in the physical construction and differences between lower and upper class.

The notable traits of the lower class is being rusty, unclean; broken; haphazardly fixed; irregular or missing body parts; limited movements because of their construction.

Exploring the specific design of the protagonist who has to be a magician
The notable characteristics of the higher class is beauty, shininess, luxury, intricate mechanisms and wide range of movement; luxurious clothing that covers up mechanisms, but, again, on closer inspection it is noted that they too are falling apart slowly.

Toolkit 2: Character Design 3

On week 3 we had to explore the world and setting, think about environment in terms of character.

At the first half of the dat we were given a random place and a random theme, and draw the place accordingly.
Mine was Sacre Coeur in Paris, in the theme of fantastical.
My version of it was a place where a mystical being or deity resides.

And afterwards we had to design an interior for it

For this terms character design project I'm exploring a mechanized and robotic world. Divided in class where the higher class is beautiful and gleaming, but because the whole world is slowly falling apart, even they seem messed up, fragile and broken upon closer inspection.

Toolkit 2: Character Design 2

This session in the first part we were given a movie/universe and had to design a character fitting for it both design both style wise.
I got Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, me not having seen it, after doing some quick studies, my first go-to was designing my take of Dr. Octopus, as I hadn't seen the actual design within it.
After that I went with a play on those daddy long legs spiders.

The next task was to take a character from our given universe, and put it in our assigned term's setting, mine being a mechanised, falling apart victorian era. I used the Spiderverse's Goblin design to play around with the concept of combining mechanisms and solid porcelain or plastic body parts.

Toolkit 2: Character Design Lesson 1

On our first Character Design lecture we were given a prop to then research on and study. And afterwards to create a character based on it.
I was given a Doctor's Stethoscope, and after researching, I was fascinated by how they used to look, instead of the classical look.

Another class assignment was to study the face and features of one of our classmates, and exaggerate it, making it into another character even.

The other half of the day, we were to start researching the themes we got for the character design we'll have to work on this term. I came to the conclusion to research more on machinery, clockwork and what could make a robot move, aswell as the general styles of a victorian era, such as clothes.
